Oxford solicitor Raj Solanki ticked off a bucket list Top 10 when he visited San Francisco in America last minute and finally got to experience the towering Golden Gate Bridge and the infamous Alcatraz Island Prison.
Together with brother Rav (age 27 and a graphic designer working in Reading) they packed in a lot of sightseeing – made quick and easy by Liana Luxury Travel’s concierge approach to transfers, chauffer driven services, hospitality packages, plus ticket bookings – but also enjoyed the regal luxury of the Fairmount Hotel, which is in upmarket Nob Hill and amongst the best in California.
Raj, age 35, explains: “As USA holidays go, Frisco has always been one of my must cities to visit and it didn’t disappoint, we fell in love with it and can’t wait to go back again – there are so many highlights. We dined at beautiful restaurants like The Cliff House, Prospect and Alioto’s and there are some really smart jazz clubs close to Union Square, while Golden Gate Park is the city’s green lung and offers some top-notch art and science museums.
“Plus, we ventured out to see charming Sausalito and the giant redwoods of Muir Woods and had a brilliant day driving up to the award-winning wineries of Napa and Sonoma.”
“Holidays to San Francisco aren’t complete though without a visit to Alcatraz, but little did we know that it sells out many weeks in advance. Liana came to the rescue however and somehow managed to get us tickets on our last day – and it was absolutely awesome. We’d been enjoying views of it from our Balcony Suite at the Fairmount, which they reckon affords the best vistas of the bay and bridge, but up close and personal it’s mesmerising.
